7-30 October 2011 Marius Pfannenstiel's first solo show in London will bring together a series of works ranging from photography to sculpture, slide projection to text and found objects. Finding, 'framing' and collecting are the basis of a practice that explores the ambiguities of appearances, situations and language. Whether in a Chinese metropolis, the Italian countryside, or at the kitchen window of his Munich flat, the artist has for many years photographed the everyday life. In this work, people themselves are mainly represented through what they produce, through the traces of their activities. In his slide shows the artist combines images from his ever-increasing store of pictures, in sequences which, without considering connections of time and place, form visual chains of association, mostly addressing a concrete theme. The pictures are accompanied by a spoken text. Marius Pfannenstiel was born in Munich in 1960, where he lives and works. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich 1983-1989 and achieved his Diploma with Prof. Sir Eduardo Paolozzi in 1989. In 1991 he was awarded a DAAD scholarship in Vienna. Selected exhibitions include: Kunstverein, Munich; Museumsquartier, Vienna, Austria; The National Museum of Fine Art, Kiev, Ukraine; Centro Cultural de Belem, Lisbon, Portugal.
